LinkedIn. 3 ways to connect with colleagues

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Are you looking for ways to connect and network with clients and colleagues via social media.   If you´re considering LinkedIn as the solution you´re in the right place. I´ve just finished 3 workshops for NTA (National Tour Association) at their conference in Seville and connecting with LinkedIn was a major conversation.

LinkedIn is a simple and professional way to make valuable connections and stay in touch with colleagues. Think about the opportunity to stay in touch with people you met at this conference or at any other networking event.

Here are 3 techniques you may find helpful:

1. Join a specialty group on Linkedin. There are numerous groups such as NTA, Tourism Professionals, etc. You can search groups easily to find your best fit. Then conduct a poll to learn what your colleagues are thinking.

2. Ask a question about an issue that you feel deserves more conversation. You can do this by starting a discussion in one of your groups.

3. Join conversations initiated by others in your group. This will get you involved in the conversation and help you meet other people in our industry.

These conversational techniques will shed some light on topics that are hot in your world. You´ll be amazed at the conversations, ideas and new connections you´ll make.

In addition, LinkedIn is the perfect way to connect with specific people in a company you´d either like to do business with or that you´d like to strengthen your ties. Consider this if you´re an attraction or hotel and are looking to connect with a tour company  product buyer. You may find them on LinkedIn by clicking on the ¨More¨ tab and then click on ¨Companies. Type in the company name you´d like to connect with and see a list of the people available on LinkedIn.

If you are a tour operator, consider using this type of search to look for specific people at a hotel you´re interested in using for your next group. This may help you make a connection before you even pick up the telephone.

Please let me know how you´re using LinkedIn to further your tourism or hospitality business. I´d love to hear your ideas.

Blogging for Travel Pros

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

With 133 million blogs flooding the internet do you ever wonder how people research information and make the time to post it.

Let’s start at the beginning with the ‘how’. I’ve found a couple of really easy blog platforms that can be set up with or without the help of a web designer or a 12 year old!

Word Press is the platform I use as it has the option to easily add photos and video. In addition, the space where you type looks like a word document.

‘What do I write about’ is a big question! When interviewing successful bloggers the formula many use is this:

o Keep an ongoing list of questions your clients frequently ask,

o Initiate a ‘blog squad’ with your staff, top clients or even industry partners to come up with relevant ideas,

o Engage others in the writing of your blog,

o Encourage your readers to comment and suggest new topics,

o Check out these ideas www.chrisbrogan.com

Tip: make it easy for people to comment on your blog by adding that feature to your set-up. Your blog comments will appear as an e-mail and then you can respond publicly.

Time! ‘How in the world will I ever find the time to write all this?’ Are you now spending time working with an ad agency to design your next campaign? Are you putting together a newsletter? Think about the time you now spend on these things and consider if your time may be better spent engaging clients and potential new clients in a 2-way conversation. Blogs foster 2 way conversations that may lead to new product development and higher visibility.

Writing gives you a way to attract new business and sets you apart as a credible expert. Blogging is a modern and accessible way to achieve that goal.

What are some ways you generate content for your blog?

Survey and Poll. Connect with your clients

Monday, April 12th, 2010

We all know the importance of listening to our clients. How often do we truly listen? Powerful listening creates loyal clients, nips any concerns before they get huge and inspires repeat and referral business.

There are a couple of on-line polls that make it really simple to listen to what your clients are thinking or needing.

LinkedIn has a simple and effective way to poll your connections. Simply go the “More” tab and click on “Polls” to create a short poll. I prefer to keep the number of questions to a maximum of 3 or 4 so that it’s easy for your connections to quickly provide you the benefit of their opinions. You can poll your first degree connections for free. In addition you can share your poll via e-mail, blog, website or within a group by using the URL provided.

Facebook also has a Polls application, “My Polls” as well as “Polls on Facebook” work well to create polls for your personal page as well as your business page.

Getting the word out about your poll:

1. add your poll to the discussion section of groups you belong to

2. tweet and lead your followers to the LinkedIn or Facebook poll

3. Send an e-mail to clients inviting them to join you on LinkedIn and/or Facebook and take the poll

4. Include the URL in your correspondence.

Results and stats:

LinkedIn provides a graphic analysis in the “My Polls” tab showing the percentage of responses to each answer. Full comments are shown on this same page.

This simple polling process can be a powerful tool to open conversations with clients and colleagues leading to more relevant products and services.
