Creative ways to use QR Codes

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Creativity abounds in the tourism sector’s use of QR codes.  You’ll find them in menus, way-finding, brochures and business cards.  Let’s explore how to use them in the role of engaging your fans using questions.

Tour Operators may want to create a QR code with a short video of an upcoming tour destination.  Print this QR code on a flyer and ask the question “What’s your favorite activity in this destination?  Please post on our Facebook page.”

Hotels can use QR codes on check-in or check-out documents and lead people to a survey asking about their hotel experience.

Travel agents can use QR codes on brochures, store fronts, business cards, destination specific flyers and flat sheets.  What a great way to promote your website or Facebook page.  How about linking the QR code to a video you’ve taken on your last fam trip?

Attractions are using QR codes to provide trivia and games to patrons as they wait in line.

Restaurants are using QR codes on menus and directing people to a video of the chef preparing a new dish on their menu. Consider exploring a wine list via QR codes that lead to interviews with vintners, an overview of the selected wine including notes and pairings.

Tip:  Make sure your QR code leads to a mobile internet site.

Already using QR codes?  Have you considered adding a trivia contest and/or scavenger hunt to your mix of QR tactics?

Have fun engaging your clients and travel pro’s with QR codes on all of your travel literature and social media!

How to Spread Awareness of your Social Presence

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Think about all those cards, connections and cool people you met at the last industry event.  Keeping up with these connections  is key to spreading the word of your social presence.

Integrating print & social

As you’re preparing for the next trade-only event, how about announcing your social involvement in the printed materials you produce.  Showing the icons and your social addresses lets your suppliers, colleagues and trade clientele know you’re in the conversation.  Industry pros are also teasing, tempting and tweeting pre-show news, trivia and appointment information.

Advanced Tip: How about creating a QR (Quick Response) code with exclusive pre-show information or an invitation.  This QR code can be e-mailed, direct mailed or inserted into a blog post for the trade.  Have you ever considered posting a QR code at your booth so that you can introduce other attendees to your offerings in a creative way? ( Here’s a reader so that you can see what appears on this QR code)

4 Practical Ways to Market your Next Group Tour.

How to integrate social and traditional media

Do you want to fill your next group tour more quickly?  Are you looking to jump start your marketing plan with social media, but not let go of your traditional marketing techniques?

As a follow up tool to an article in NTA’s Courier Magazine on marketing your event using social media here are some practical ways to multiply your effectiveness in marketing your next group tour.

Provide links in your e-mail blasts

Imagine news of your next group departure being spread quickly (and easily) on social media.   Many people are using the events section in LinkedIn to create an event for an upcoming group tour.  This useful social media tool provides you with a simple template which shows on your LinkedIn profile.  Think about using this to market your next consumer event instantly.  A bonus is that business professionals as well as tourism pros will see your event and sell into it or pass it along to their connections.  In addition, you can invite people from your list of contacts as well.

Facebook also provides an event tab that is easy to complete and update.  With the new features of the business page, you can set up an event, invite friends from your personal profile and talk about it on your business fan page.  Once you begin inviting people to your newly created event, they can also invite their friends.  Isn’t this a great way to get your clients to help you market your next tour or event?

Links and your newsletter

Once you’ve created this event you can use the URL link in a myriad of creative ways.  Shorten the link using a link shortening tool and consider these ideas:

  • Add the link to your brochure,
  • Include it in your flat sheet
  • Print the link on your postcard mailing
  • Include the link in your other social network postings

    QR codes

When you create a QR code and include it on your print materials (newspaper ad, postcard mailing, flat sheet, etc) people take a photo of it with their smart phone and it directs them to the website or social page you’ve designated.  Check out these QR code builders.

This is a totally new and creative way to bring together traditional media with new media and raise curiosity.

All of these ideas will keep your clients on the edge of their seats by providing a level of excitement for the newest tools of engagement.
